Historical Namesake:
In about 1875, Annie accompanied her husband, a gold seeker across this land, along with their young son. When they heard about gold being found in the Black Hills they turned north. They were run out by the U.S. Cavalry, but soon returned and prospected. Everywhere her husband’s gold seeking took her, Annie started a school. Schools allowed families to join the miners, and in very short order the Black Hills were settled and civilized. When he decided to move on to Montana, she and her son stayed. She later served as Superintendent of Schools for a large area. She rode horseback up to the remote schools that she had started for many years.
